Cross Country

Where are they now ....

Carol Thomas Downing is a singer, violinist, fiddler, teacher and children's choral conductor. She founded the Peabody Children's Chorus (Baltimore) and is founder and current Artistic Director of the Virginia Children's Chorus (Norfolk). Since her days in Cross Country, "T" has become an avid, rabid collector and performer of Irish ballads and fiddle tunes. She travels to the west coast of Ireland regularly to feed her habit. With her husband Frank, she plays Appalachian, New England and Celtic tunes with the "Live Music" contra dance band, and is a regular singer/fiddler at pub sessions in SE Virginia .

Ned Quist is a music librarian by day and contra dance musician or dancer by night. Since his Cross Country days, he’s moved to Providence , RI where he’s the Music Librarian at Brown University .  With his wife, Alice Pace and fiddler Andy Grover, he’s a member of “White Squall”, a contra dance band that plays regularly in Rhode Island , Connecticut and Massachusetts and recently made its first tour of upstate NY playing in Rochester, Ithaca and Binghamton . This past Spring we had the pleasure of playing with Steve Zakon-Anderson, former chef extraordinaire at the Dublin School and one of the top dance callers in New England .

John Yankee has continued his cross-country adventures ever since leaving Baltimore .  In 1994 he settled in Telluride, Colorado , where he built a music curriculum in the school system, formed the Telluride Choral Society (children and adult choruses), and revived the town’s chamber orchestra.  He also worked with the Telluride Rep and participated in Telluride’s Bluegrass , Jazz and Chamber Music festivals.  With all the spare time on his hands, Yankee taught himself hammered dulcimer and formed the folk/Celtic quartet “Acoustic Medicine” and also led his own jazz combo “Yankee Boy Swing” on trumpet and vocals.  Since July 2004, after a two-year ‘walkabout’ during which he literally criss-crossed the US several times enjoying residencies ranging from conducting in Chicago to composing in the Badlands, John has resided in San Diego, where he currently schemes to build new and exciting things once again.
